State League Men Lost to Reds 0-3, Lost to Rossmoyne 2-3
State league men had a tough double header playing Reds and Rossmoyne. Saturday’s game saw us take on a young and strong Reds team at home. The boys showed patches of their potential but were unable to capitalise on opportunities. Our second game on Sunday against Rossmoyne was a tight 5 setter. The boys again showed huge potential with out young school players Seb Northmore and Ben Ramsay playing top level volleyball. Unfortunately we lost 15-13 in the 5th set but we still have one more shot this coming weekend to make finals.
State League Women Defeated Reds in a double header, 3-2 and 3-0
SLW had a big weekend of volleyball playing nine sets vs Reds in a double header. Saturday the team got out to a 2-0 lead but Reds came back firing to win the next two sets. The fifth set went down to the wire, trading points to 13 all before the Cats ladies clinched the game with the last two points and guaranteed a minor premiership.
Sunday was a rematch vs Reds, and Balcatta again opened a lead and looked like going 2-0 up. But after a Reds player injury and medical timeout, the Reds team settled and came back from 17-23 down to run over Balcatta 27-25 on a controversial set point call.
Adjusting the rotations and working on mindset and flow, the Cats ladies held on to a small lead through the 3rd set to win. But in the 4th set Reds worked hard to build a lead and were up 19-16 looking for another fifth set when the Cats ladies turned it around to win seven points in a row and rebuild a lead that Reds couldn't close.
Player of the weekend goes to Mae Stoddart who was impressive in all phases of the game including some big blocks and serves, some excellent defensive digs and making plays on match point! We are so pleased to see one of our younger players shining - both making plays and showing leadership at the highest level in the state - well done Mae!
Coach Aaron.
State League Reserves Men lost to Reds 1-3
State League Reserves Women Lost to Reds 1-3, Lost to Rossmoyne 3-1
SLRW had a big weekend against Reds and Rossmoyne. There was something not quite right with the ladies showing from our previous 3 games. Something was missing with their approach. Saturdays game against reds was a tough battle with Reds having a fantastic all round game while our girls struggled to find their feet. They didnt give up tho falling behind to come back close to nearly take each set. Unfortuntely they lost 3-0 with each set being within a few points. Sundays game against rossy the girls seemed a little flat from their previous day's loss but with an amazing defensive backcourt pressure and the efforts given by a selected few, the girls saw the girls fight for every point. The final result was 3-1 with Matilda Hamer stepping up and setting while captain marie took some time to recover. This see's the girls still in 1st position but could potentially see them to 3rd with a loss this weekend. A standout for this week was Karlia McCormack for her blocking and hitting pressure as it was outstanding.
Division One Men lost to Reds 0-3
Division One Women Lost to Reds 0-3
Division Two Men defeated Reds 3-2
The lads started off strong gaining an early lead with some great hits and sound in defence. They made a few subs for some div1 development players that gave them a decent lead in the 2nd set. We were able to crawl back and win 26 - 24 after being 20 - 24 down. Reds really started to fire up in the 3rd set taking a 10 - 0 lead with some solid serving pressure that didnt allow us to run any clean attacks but were able to claw our way back to 18 - 25. The fourth set was a lot closer, however with some strong attack from Reds they were able to take the 4th 23 - 25. The lads got an early lead in the 5th giving us a nice buffer to take the match. We had myself and Richi from Div1 fill in to avoid a forfeit and overall was a really fun game. Very difficult to give player of the match to anybody, but Xander and Harry won us countless point from their strong outside hits
Division Two Women defeated Reds 3-2
This was top vs bottom of the ladder today so I was expecting quite an easy match but it wasn't to be. Using the rules to avoid a forfeit, Reds had only 3 of their regular Div 2 players with two fill-ins from Div 1 and one from State League. This led to it being a very different game and my intended game plan unravelled.
We won the first set 25-17 and the second set 25-16, but then the Reds girls starting gelling together and we just made too many spiking and communication errors. The third and fourth sets were tight with us just losing them and then we ran out of time in the fifth, winning 12-10 in a very abrupt and confusing finish due to the duty team getting mixed up abou the times. It was disappointing not to fight for the finish, but I'm glad we came away with the win.
There were a few mentionable performances for the match today. Georgina started the game in excellent form setting 5:1 and showing off some great front court setting skills with some timely second plays over the net and some great setting choices. Her serving has also become a steady rock for the team where we can really put the opposition under pressure and get some great runs of points.
Charisse and Eugenie passed very well in back court with some really excellent serve reception on display today.
Jade stepped in to middle with Bella being out with an injury and I can't write this report without mentioning her fantastic blocking, including a stuff block on the Reds State League player. It was roof raising!
But the player of the day was Sasha. Some really high quality back court passing and defence against tough opposition shows just how much she has improved as a player this year in both her skills and her confidence. It was also fantastic to see her put some power behind her spiking, getting some great kills during the match. She also backed this up with some very consistent serving under pressure.
It was a good game against an unexpectedly tough opposition. This was a good challenge for us leading into finals and for our top of the table clash against UWA next weekend.
Division Three Men defeated Reds 3-0
Division Three Women defeated Reds 3-0
The girls played an exceptional game, defeating Reds very comfortably. They went in with a game plan of covering tips and short balls and they executed perfectly
We were so dominant We decided to have some fun and switch positions
The middles played pass hit and pass hitters played middle, and we let the oppo set too. Despite all the changes the girls adapted quickly and still were able to show their dominance on court
All of the girls played extremely well but two stand out players were Lucrezia Bonini, usually our libero but had to play pass hit, and our opposite Lucia Lam, who adjusted very well to being a setter
Lucrezia had multiple aces in a row and the other team struggled to get her serves up
All in all a 10/10 game from everyone. Coach Yasir.
